Denali National Park

Every year over 400,000 people visit Denali National Park, but only a select few get to see Moraine Lake!

Moraine Lake is a unique location within the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve.  It was created very recently, geologically speaking, as the Backside Glacier receded from the lateral moraine of the Ruth Glacier. Accessible solely by floatplane, the lake is located roughly 20 miles up the Ruth at the confluence of the Backside Glacier and the western lateral moraine of the Ruth Glacier. The Ruth is a valley glacier and begins 3 vertical miles below the peak of Denali (Mt. McKinley). The Ruth Glacier’s famous “Great Gorge”, just around the corner, is one mile wide and drops almost 2,000 feet over 10 miles. Above the Ruth Glacier are towering 5,000 foot tall granite walls. From the top of these walls to the bottom of the Ruth is a vertical distance exceeding twice the depth of the Grand Canyon!

Like the Ruth, the Backside Glacier is also a valley glacier. Looking up the Backside you can see the tallest mountain in North America, Denali (Mt. McKinley). Most impressively, the Moraine Lake sits only 17 miles from the peak of the mountain. This is as close as you can get without strapping on crampons. Denali stands 20,320 feet tall and displays more vertical relief than Mt. Everest.

So why come to Moraine Lake? The answer is quite simple - the hiking around the lake and along the surrounding creeks, valleys, and ridges is absolutely second to none. And if you’re fortunate enough to get to witness Denali (The High One) while on one of your hikes, you’ll understand why we keep coming back to this amazing piece of wilderness! It truly is Denali unexplored.
