FAQ

Everyone asks:

What about the mosquitoes?
In case you've heard horror stories... the number of mosquitoes is greatly dependent on hatching season and annual weather conditions. While we are bound to encounter some mosquitoes during the course of our adventure, their numbers have not generally presented major problems on past trips in these specific areas. That said, please arrive prepared with insect repellent and a head net to fend off any mosquitoes that are present.

Will bears be a problem?
Alaska is bear country! There are both grizzly and black bears in most of the wilderness areas of Alaska we visit. We love seeing bears in the wild, one of the most thrilling experiences common in Alaska's backcountry. That said, traveling safely and taking precautions to minimize a negative encounter are things we take very seriously. In addition to a thorough bear safety orientation, you’ll also see the many precautions we take on all of our trips including: 1) all of our food has been packaged to minimize odors – we vacuum seal most of our fresh ingredients and sauces, we pack our food in bear resistant food canisters, and we store our food well away from camp. 2) We make noise when we’re hiking in thick brush or when we’re hiking in windy conditions to minimize surprise encounters. 3) We keep an exceptionally clean camp and 4) as a last resort we travel armed. Your guide will be carrying a .44 magnum or a shotgun. Alaska’s national parks allow firearms and our guides are thoroughly trained.  Again, using a gun is a last resort and thankfully we’ve never had to call one into service on a trip!

What kind of food might we expect?
Our food is excellent – in fact it is something that clearly differentiates us from our competition. We have spent the past decade fine tuning our backcountry menu. Breakfasts include pancakes, scrambles, homemade granola and cereal, locally roasted gourmet coffee, assorted tea and cocoa. Lunches could include an Italian Club torta sandwich, Asiago bagels and Alaska lox, Curried Tuna pita, and Wasa crackers with Genoa Salami and a roasted red pepper goat cheese spread. We also have homemade snack mixes both salty and sweet and energy and candy bars available throughout the day. Dinners could include Carbonara pasta, pad Thai, chicken and chorizo enchiladas, penne pasta with a roasted red pepper pesto, etc. And we ALWAYS enjoy one of Adventure Appetites home baked desserts after dinner.

When would you require a deposit? and how much? Trip cancelation insurance? Can we get it through you?

You’ll have the option to pay the deposit by mailing us a check, calling us with a credit card number or by using a Visa, Master Card, or American Express on our secure online payment system. Lake Clark National Park:

Why are so many of your trips in Lake Clark National Park?
Simply because we believe Lake Clark National Park to be the most spectacular and diverse park in Alaska. At over 4-million acres, this wilderness park has something for everyone - miles of coastline, active volcanoes, spectacular lakes, glaciers and icefields, wild and scenic rivers, stunning mountains, and very few visitors. If you seek solitude and the perfect Alaskan landscape, Lake Clark will not disappoint.

Where is Lake Clark?
Lake Clark and its surrounding 4 million-acre national park is located approximately 150 miles West-Southwest of Anchorage.

How do you get to Lake Clark?
Access to Lake Clark National Park is solely by small aircraft or, in some instances, by boat.

Is transportation to Lake Clark included in the price of the trip?
Absolutely, our trips are all inclusive from Anchorage.

Where will you meet us?
Alaska Alpine Adventures will provide a shuttle to Merrill Field on the morning of day 1.  Your guide will meet you at the airplane when you arrive in Port Alsworth - the gateway community to Lake Clark National Park.

Who will I be flying with and what time will we be departing on day one?
You'll be flying with Lake and Peninsula Air. On occasion we also use Lake Clark Air. Both air taxis are located at Merrill Field. We usually schedule our departures for 11am on day one. An Alaska Alpine Adventures representative will pick you up at your hotel or B&B between 10 &10:30am that morning.

Where is Merrill Field?
Merrill Field is located just east of downtown Anchorage.  “Bush” flying is an adventure in and of itself and variable weather conditions may cause delays. We will try to keep you informed of any changes or delays as they occur. Remember to please be ready at least 45 minutes before your expected departure.

Who was Dick Proenneke?
Dick Proenneke lived on Twin Lakes, in the heart of Lake Clark National Park, from 1968-1998. He resided in a small hand-hewn log cabin on the south shore of the upper lake near Hope Creek. Dick, who has been called a modern-day Thoreau, was a prolific writer and photographer. His cabin, which we visit on a number of our adventures, is a testament to his simple lifestyle and a reminder of his dedication to wilderness and conservation.

Is Lake Clark National Park a good place for viewing wildlife?
Absolutely. Lake Clark has been called 'Alaska's epitome' and 'little Denali', though at 4 million-acres and roughly the size of Switzerland, the term 'little' doesn't really apply!  In addition all 5 species of Pacific salmon, the park is home to grizzly and black bears, Dall sheep, caribou, moose, wolves, and tremendous seasonal populations of migratory birds.

Will I see wildlife on my trip?
Wildlife viewing on our trips has always been reliable.  It's important to keep in mind that while we do have abundant wildlife populations in Alaska, animals are often obscured by the vastness of the landscape, subject to imprecise migration routes and often effected by Alaska's dynamic weather patterns.  While we schedule our trips to maximize the chances of seeing wildlife, there are simply too many factors to make any guarantees.

What will the weather be like on my trip?
Alaska has some of the most dynamic and dramatic weather on the planet.  During the summer months in Alaska, average daytime temperatures range from 60 to 80 degrees F, nighttime and morning temperatures are cooler, but rarely dip below 40 degrees F.  Fall arrives early at these latitudes and you'll experience cooler temperatures and fewer hours of daylight in late August and early September.  Throughout the summer season, you may experience rain, sun, wind, clouds and fog on your departure.  We live by the adage "prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and you'll likely end up with some of both".

Itinerary

Day 1: Your trip begins today in Anchorage, Alaska. You can arrive at any time and transfer to our bed & breakfast independently. Depending on your arrival time, the remainder of the day is at leisure to relax after your flight or to explore some of the city’s notable sites including the Anchorage Museum of History & Art or the city Park Strip. This evening, you’ll meet your guides at 6pm and head to an orientation dinner at a local restaurant. The orientation will include a discussion of the trip, an introduction to our unique style of Alaska wilderness travel, a familiarization of the principles of Leave No Trace, and a conversation about traveling safely in Alaska’s backcountry. Dinner included.

Day 2: This morning, you will meet your guides for breakfast and an orientation at 8am. We’ll then drive south from Anchorage to Whittier. The drive along the Seward Highway has been called one of the most scenic drives in the world. Beluga Whales cruise the waters of Turnagain Arm and glaciers cling to the rugged mountains of the Chugach Range. Our destination, Whittier, a small port town on the shores of Prince William Sound, is the home of the Discovery – our home for the next 5 nights! Upon our arrival, we’ll board the yacht, meet Captain Dean Rand and his crew, and enjoy an orientation of the vessel and the itinerary. We’ll then motor out of the harbor and head out into the Prince William Sound. During lunch we will begin with our first safety briefing, an avalanche and terrain discussion, and an overview of the day’s route options - a routine that will occur each day before skiing. By 2pm, we'll be climbing into the mountains above Prince William Sound at one of our favorite day one locations for the first turns of the trip!  All meals included.

Days 3-6: We’ll spend these days exploring the waters and mountains of Prince William Sound.  We’ll then head out into the mountains in search of good snow, great views, and incredible turns. We’ll plan on spending 6-8 hours each day in the mountains, but opportunities to return to the Discovery will be given to those who don’t want to spend the entire day outside. The beauty of skiing in Prince William Sound is that there’s a variety of terrain, including great tree skiing for inclement weather days. Evenings will be spent aboard the Discovery celebrating each day’s adventure. There will also be kayaks available for those wanting a more intimate experience with the marine ecosystem of Prince William Sound. All meals included.

Day 7:  After enjoying a variety of warm fresh breads, muffins, rolls, fruits, cereals, various warm egg dishes, juices, coffee and tea for breakfast, we’ll prepare for one last short day of skiing in the backcountry.  By 1pm, we'll be back on board and under way.   The Discovery will return to Whittier by late afternoon where we’ll meet our shuttle van for the transfer back to Anchorage. If you are returning home this evening, please book your homebound flight for anytime after 8pm. Breakfast & lunch included.
